Our guide dropped us at the Cerro Castillo bus station for the four hour bus ride to El Calafate, Argentina, the gateway to Los Glaciares National Park. We spent the night in Calafate at Hostel del Glaciar Libertador, as well as a second night
three days later on our way back to Chile.
Glaciar Libertador was adequate, but our least favorite lodging of the trip. It caters to backpackers, and we would gladly have paid more for an upgrade, but Go South didn't offer one. They should.
When we checked in, Glaciar Libertador insisted that they did not have an available room with twin beds (specified in our reservation). When we were adamant and said we would call our tour company and have them put us elsewhere, they gave us each a separate room. Which both turned out to have twin beds!!
We found El Calafate to be much more touristy than Punta Arenas and Puerto Natales in Chile. The
main street is lined with souvenir shops and restaurants. We had an okay lunch at Viva la Pepa (Av. Libertador al 1000) and a great dinner at Casimiro Bigua Grill and Rotisserie (Parrilla & Asador).
