Choosing a China Tour

  Kowloon

Across the harbor from Hong Kong Island is the Kowloon peninsula with many of the best hotels, the famous Nathan Road shopping district, and fascinating bird, flower, and street markets.

Shangri-La Hotel

Shangri-La Hotel We stayed at the Shangri-La and upgraded to a harbour view room.  The Peninsula, just down the street, is Hong Kong's most famous hotel and would have been our first choice, but the Shangri-La was five-star luxurious, so we had no complaints.

If you book a harbour view room, be sure and specify an upper floor or you'll find yourself looking at a crane.  There's massive subway construction in the area - it made getting around a navigational challenge, to say the least.

Restaurants

Avenue Restaurant in Holiday Inn Golden Mile, Kowloon Yes, it's in a Holiday Inn (called the Golden Mile), but things are different in China, and we had an absolutely delicious meal at Avenue, named one of Hong Kong's Best Restaurants by HK Tatler for four consecutive years.
T'ang Court Restaurant in Golden Eagle Hotel, Kowloon We had a wonderful dim sum lunch at T'ang Court in the Golden Eagle Hotel - the setting's luxurious and the food was excellent.  But if you go, be sure to reserve a table well in advance.  We called only the day before and ended up having lunch at 2:30 p.m.
