October through February, you can see burrowing Magellan penguins - the large colonies on Magdalena Island (the Los Pinguinos National Monument), are about a two hour boat ride from Punta Arenas.   Or the smaller colonies at Otway Sound are about 40 miles outside Punta Arenas, on the way to Puerto Natales and Torres del Paine.

After our visit to Otway Sound and a short stop in Puerto Natales, the capital of the Ultimo Esperanza (Last Hope) region of southern Chile, we spent the night at the comfortable Hosteria El Pionero in Cerro Castillo.
