St. Petersburg - Catherine Palace (Tsarskoye Selo)

Catherine Palace

Designed by Rastrelli in 1752 for Tsarina Elizabeth, she named it after her mother, Catherine I, who had originally owned the estate.  It was further enriched during the subsequent reign of Catherine the Great.

Occupied by the Nazis during World War II and reduced to rubble, it has been completely rebuilt.  The history of the Amber Room is particularly fascinating.
