Don't miss this crowd-pleasing show if you can possibly get to New York. It's got to be the hottest show on Broadway, and it's a blast - catchy tunes, tons of energy, memorable performances, lots of fun all round. And take the kids if you can, it's great family entertainment. Who knew that John Waters, the creator of the 1988 film on which the show is based (and the infamous Pink Flamingos), would turn out to be so respectable?
Harvey Fierstein is terrific as Edna Turnblad, and Marissa Jaret Winokur, starring as Tracy Turnblad - well, we can't tell you how she is because we didn't see her. Shoshana Bean, her first understudy (two are listed in the program) replaced her at our matinee performance. After paying $100 per ticket and making a special trip to New York, we were not at all happy about this. But Shoshana was wonderful! After seeing her performance, we didn't see how Marissa could have been any better and didn't feel we missed a thing. Date Visited: 2/8/2003
