The Edison Hotel is a great bargain, just off Broadway on 47th, near Times Square and many theaters.  Thanks to a recent renovation, the Art Deco lobby is stunning, and the room I got for $170 ($196 with tax) was small, but not the least bit shabby, extremely clean, and had a huge walk in closet (room 1727).

The Edison also has a gift shop, a bar (the Rum House), two restaurants - Cafe Edison (nicknamed the Polish Tearoom by theatre patrons), and Sophia's (Italian) - plus a night club, The Supper Club.   We found it much superior to the Milford Plaza, where I stayed in early June for $199 a night plus taxes (and which now charges $299 a night).
